Cable management is easy to overlook when planning an office desk.
Power units, monitors, docking stations and USB-C charging tend to receive most of the attention, but all of those products create cables that still need somewhere to go.
Good desk cable management is not simply about making the workstation look neater. It helps support cables, keeps connections organised and makes equipment easier to access when something needs to be changed.
This guide looks at the main parts of desk cable management and how to plan a cleaner workstation from the start.
Why does desk cable management matter?
A modern office workstation can contain a surprising number of cables.
These may include:
- Monitor power leads
- Display cables
- Docking station connections
- Laptop charging cables
- Desktop power leads
- Data cables
- USB cables
- Height adjustable desk power and control cables
Without somewhere to support and route them, those cables often end up hanging underneath the desk, trailing across the floor or becoming bundled together around the power sockets.
A planned cable route gives each part of the installation a purpose.
Think of cable management in two directions
Most workstations need to manage cables in two different directions.
Horizontal cable management deals with cables travelling underneath the work surface.
Vertical cable management deals with cables travelling between the desk and the floor or building power supply.
Using both where required normally produces a much cleaner result than relying on one product to control every cable around the workstation.
Use an under desk basket for horizontal cable management
A cable basket mounted beneath the work surface provides somewhere to support power leads, data cables and excess cable length.
It can also help keep plugs and cables close to an under desk power unit rather than allowing them to hang down beneath the workstation.

Do not forget where the cables enter and leave the basket
Simply fitting a basket does not automatically solve the cable route.
Think about where cables need to enter and leave it.
For example, monitor cables may enter from the rear of the work surface, while the main power lead may leave the basket at one end before travelling towards the floor.
Planning these points before mounting the basket can prevent cables having to double back across the underside of the desk.
Vertical cable management keeps the route to the floor controlled
Once the cables have been organised underneath the desk, they still need a route towards the floor.
A cable spine can provide a defined vertical path between the work surface and the floor or power source.
This helps prevent a group of loose cables simply hanging down behind the workstation.
It can also make the installation look much more intentional when the desk is viewed from the side or rear.
Fixed desks and sit stand desks have different requirements
A fixed height workstation only needs enough cable length to reach from the desk to the building supply.
A sit stand desk is more demanding because the work surface moves while the floor connection remains in the same place.
The cable route therefore needs to accommodate movement throughout the complete height range of the desk.

When planning a moving desk, check the cable route with the desk both fully lowered and fully raised.
What should you check on a height adjustable desk?
Before fixing any cable management in place, check:
- The full movement of the work surface
- The location of the desk motors
- The position of the control box
- The mains power entry point
- The longest distance the cables need to travel
- That no cable becomes tight at maximum height
- That excess cable cannot become trapped at minimum height
The cable management should move with the furniture without placing unnecessary tension on electrical or data connections.
What is a Cable Zip?
A vertical cable tidy can also be useful where a grouped cable route needs to travel between the workstation and floor.
The Cable Zip provides another way to organise the vertical section of an office cable installation.
It is particularly useful where loose cables would otherwise be visible underneath or behind the desk.
The most suitable vertical solution depends on the furniture, the number of cables and whether the desk moves.
Plan power and cable management together
Cable management works best when it is considered at the same time as the power installation.
For example, a typical workstation might contain:
- A desktop power unit for accessible power and USB-C charging
- A Malmo unit underneath the desk for permanent equipment
- A cable basket supporting power and data cables
- A vertical cable spine managing the route towards the floor
- A GST18 mains lead connecting the furniture power system to the building supply
Planning these parts together normally produces a much cleaner installation than choosing the power products first and trying to hide all of the cables afterwards.
Keep permanent equipment underneath the desk
One way to reduce visible cabling is to decide which equipment genuinely needs to be accessible.
Monitors and docking stations can usually remain permanently connected underneath the desk.
Phones, laptops and temporary chargers are better served by accessible desk power and USB-C charging.
This prevents permanent plugs and chargers from occupying space on the work surface and allows much of the associated cabling to remain contained underneath.
Avoid excessive cable length where possible
Extra cable length can be useful, but too much creates another problem to manage.
Where different mains lead lengths are available, choose a length that suits the actual distance between the furniture and the power supply.

Any necessary excess cable should be supported rather than left hanging beneath the desk.
Do not put everything into one tight bundle
A neat looking cable bundle is not always the same thing as good cable management.
Cables should have enough room to follow a sensible route without being sharply bent, crushed or placed under unnecessary tension.
Power, data and other connections should also be routed appropriately for the installation.
A basket or tray gives cables space to be supported without requiring every lead to be tightly tied together.
Allow access for maintenance
Office equipment changes.
Monitors are replaced, laptops change, docking stations are upgraded and desks are rearranged.
Cable management should make those changes easier rather than permanently trapping every connection underneath the furniture.
Where possible, keep connectors and power supplies reasonably accessible so that equipment can be replaced without dismantling the entire workstation.

- Whether the desk is fixed or height adjustable
- That cables have enough length without excessive slack
- That cables are properly supported
- That connections remain accessible for maintenance
- That moving furniture does not place tension on the cables
Good cable management starts with the layout
The neatest workstation is usually the one where cable management was planned before the equipment was installed.
Start with the position of the power supply and the equipment that needs to be connected. Decide where permanent plugs will sit, where users need accessible charging and how cables will travel between those points.
Then use the appropriate desk cable management to support that route.
A basket underneath the work surface and a controlled vertical route to the floor can make a significant difference to both the appearance and practicality of an office workstation.
